I owe my blog-esteem to Star Wars

We've all been there, we bloggers. Wrestling with the temptation to blog for dollars comments, or in some cases, visitors. I've been through the whole spectrum of motives...from wishing I were brilliant or witty like some of the bloggers out there with tremendous followings, to debating whether or not to turn comments off entirely so as to not be writing for feedback or validation. I mean, what does it take to get my closest friends to read my blog?! As far as I know none of them do. And most of my relatives only read it sporadically, if ever.

Somewhere along the line I stopped caring about getting comments from my readers, and made peace with just blogging for my own personal gratification. This, may I add, is a huge relief. In addition, I only leave comments on other blogs when I genuinely want to. No "tit-for-tat" commenting any more.

But I DO have a site meeter tracking visits to my blog. And I confess it IS gratifying to know that I have some people who stop by and see what I'm up to. In fact I have quite a regular following here. There's my faithful reader in Modesto, CA (hi Modesto!), and the one in Marietta, GA (howdy Marietta!), and then there's the person in Houston who comes in via my friend Shelah's blog (hi Shelah's blog friend in Houston!). Oh, can't forget UC Davis...Yo! Whasssup?!

Anyway, suffice to say I ♥ my readers. Even if they've you've never commented and I have no idea why they you bother stopping by regularly, it does give me a little warm fuzzy to know I'm not alone here. It's like that classic Jim Cary line from The Mask (starting at 1:35).

That said, there's something rewarding about checking my site meter and seeing hundreds of visitors, from all over planet earth, coming here to my humble blog. The only thing is, 99% of them are here for one thing and one thing only: my Star Wars Birthday Party post.

Yes, I owe my modestly impressive stats and the self-esteem gained by them to the fact that I pulled off a great Star Wars party a few years back, and blogged about it last August. Though they don't comment, I get hundreds of visitors to my blog every week, seeking ideas about hosting a Star Wars birthday party.

Guess there really is something to that whole force business after all!

Grateful for:
1) the ability to make awesome birthday cakes for my family
2) my lurkers
3) the laptop I write on

I have recently become a fan of your blog, and not because of the Star Wars party. Though I must say, your cakes look awesome and I am planning to make your most recently posted one for Father's Day (it sounds just perfect for my husband). I really enjoy the way that you use words and create imagery, which I try to do myself...but I'm probably less successful. I'm still struggling with being comfortable leaving my comments "on" if I don't get enough feedback and I am also trying to write for myself without needing validation...it just feels so good to share what you know or think and have someone actually read it, whether they agree or disagree. I'll get there. Keep up the beautiful work!

I just noticed how cool the shadows in Gator's video add a very special effect - almost as if he's not alone. Magical.

I think people who use readers to see recent blog posts are less likely to actually then go open the post and leave messages unless they have something really burning to share - or they just love leaving feedback for people, maybe hoping for a tit-for-tat on their own blog at some point. At least that's been my experience. FWIW. Kbim

Hey! I'm probably the one from Marietta--altho I don't really live there--it's just the closest "big city" to me!
I come here because I love the way you share your heart. I am in awe of your sweet, positive spirit despite the way your life started. Oh--and your recipes are pretty awesome, too!

Aww, babe, I'm going to have to start clicking through. I read your blog in bloglines. ALWAYS. Though probably not one of your dearest. Nonetheless, I adore you. I'm so grateful you busted through my aloofness (shyness) as soon as I moved in.

LOVE that you did a Star Wars party and posted about it and that is why you get found so often!! HILARIOUS b/c I FREAKD a yr. ago when I tried to do a "Animal party" for my 7 yr old daughter and read other moms' (just like YOU!!! :) posts about their joy/pride/enthusiasm for the whole party. Cake, games, decor, etc. while I could barely do the minimum for my kids let alone a bday party. Hardly could make it thru Target before breaking down. THAT was pre-life-savin' Lexipro days. Seriously. Just finished sons' Spiderman party 2 days ago that will never be found online b/c I am a minimalist. Red and blue cupcakes is my style but I had fun and was HAPPY. New person and my kids' are the recipients of the blessings that come with that. Hope you feel the same soon!!!
Hugs to you!

OOPS! Just read your Star Wars party original post and had to smile. It is odd how much I LURVE you b/c usually I shake my head at anyone that would suggest that I would or could actually use a "template" unless threatened with the death of one of my offsprings. That word - along with hot glue, ribbon, food dye, glitter, and toothpicks - aren't in my vocab. My girls wish they were. I take them to movies and manicures instead. Easy trade but no Supermom of the yr. award fo that! xxxx

Thanks for not forgetting me, I'm the UC Davis-er! I really enjoy reading your blog... I found it through Michelle's, who I found linked from someone else I know, even though I don't know either of you in person! It's funny that it links me to UC Davis, but it makes sense considering I use their internet to connect.

My future hubby is on track to be a doctor (applying next year though), so I like reading about how you, the kids, and him all deal with the long hours, struggles, placements, etc.

I don't comment very often... and I have a very similar attitude to my blog readership. No "tit-for-tat" for me, either. Sadly, because I should be more open about letting those whose words move me know how much I appreciate them. Usually though, it's because I just can't find the right words. See? ;))

Now... off to see your Star Wars post! xoxo

I enjoy your posts, Blue. You were actually the very first person to leave a comment on my blog other than my wife. I've always enjoyed your writing and your sense of spirit.

I'm one of the "relatives only reads it sporadically" types....

Don't take it personal big sis... You should consider yourself #1 since you're on the top of my very short bookmark list of blogs. I'm quite certian I visit your blog about 3 times more often than any others (including other siblings/family.) I'm just not that hooked on them for some reason. Perhaps it's because I think I'm up to speed with everyone via facebook status updates or something..... *hmmmm*

Anyway, I thought I'd remind you how much I love you and how lucky I am to be living close by - so we get to see each other more often.

You are an incredible person!
